Tracy is returning from medical leave, due to both childbirth and PTSD, to the Seattle Police Department's Violent Crimes Section, and despite missing her baby daughter, Daniela, immensely, she knows her husband, Danny, and new nanny will take good care of her. She soon discovers that her temporary replacement at VCS, Detective Maria Fernandez, has seemingly taken her position. Her manipulative superior, Captain Johnny Nolasco, informs her that there is no place for her in VCS anymore but that she could take a demotion and move to the cold case unit as Detective Art Nunzio is about to retire and she can take up his caseload as the single officer to man the unit. Nolasco is a really nasty piece of work who has had a grudge against Tracy since the days she was a trainee at the police academy and he was her instructor. His aim with pushing her towards investigating cold cases is not a noble one; he hopes that it will impact her emotionally reminding her of her desperate two-decade-old search for her missing sister, Sarah, and that she will eventually resign due to this strain. Pondering the decision, it's Art, a caring and diligent investigator who has an impeccable demeanour and impressive solve rate, who convinces her to take the job and she quickly takes the reins. With big shoes to fill she scours the cases and it's the disappearance of 5-year-old Elle Chin, a young girl whose father, Bobby, was an SPD officer, that initially piques her interest. He had taken Elle on a day trip to a Halloween corn maze on the one day per week his estranged wife, Jewel, allowing him to spend with her; they were currently going through an acrimonious divorce and custody battle at the time. The file tells Tracy they believe Elle was abducted 5 years ago. As well as this cold case, her old partner at VCS, Detective Kinsington 'Kins' Rowe asks for her help in the active investigation of a missing jogger. Stephanie Cole, a receptionist who had only recently moved to the city, had last been seen in North Park on a running trail. It soon becomes clear that her disappearance can be linked to two prostitutes who vanished from the same quiet, middle-class neighbourhood as Cole. No one saw or heard anything suspicious but even with no evidence or leads to follow they must try to drum some up as Cole may still be alive. Whilst canvassing the local area, Tracy's gut instinct tells her the three Sprague brothers who live together in a rundown property nearby are hiding something. This is a riveting, engrossing and highly addictive addition to an already brilliant series with plenty of drama, exciting developments, tension, twists and genius red herrings and the office politics and favouritism add a different dimension too. Tracy continues to develop and is a likeable and admirable protagonist juggling her life as a young mother with a high-flying and demanding career. It was good to see her progression with her therapist, Lisa Walsh, who has been treating her PTSD. The dark secrets, lies and deception of the plot make for a tasty and scintillating read. Highly recommended. by Robert Dugoni
